I’ve never been afraid of changing things up a bit with a little paint, but since we moved into our house last year I feel like all I’ve done is paint! I can count 8 different rooms or hallways and over 15 pieces of furniture that have been painted just in the last year. I’ve pretty much got my technique down to a science, and I thought I’d share 10 of my favorite paint supplies in my painting arsenal. And, you may be surprised that some of them are household items that you already have on hand.

Spray Can Attachment
Spray paint has got to one of the easiest ways to update your furniture or home decor. I’ve spray painted beds, chairs, picture frames, knobs, faucets, light fixtures, patio furniture, pots and planter boxes…there isn’t much that I haven’t spray painted. It’s easy to apply and dries fast so you can change the look of your decor in just a few minutes. The only downside I can think of is that your finger will start to cramp up if you are painting for a long time. This little spray can attachment completely eliminates that! It just snaps onto the top of your can and makes it a lot less awkward to use. This is one of my newest paint supplies, and I can’t imagine not having it now.
HVLP Paint Sprayer
As much as I love spray paint, sometimes you can’t find the right color or sheen that you’re looking for. You can always use a paint brush or roller, but if you want a super smooth surface, an HVLP paint sprayer is the way to go. HVLP stands for high volume low pressure, but that’s not really important. They work great on things like furniture or cabinets. I had no idea how inexpensive or easy to use they are until I got mine. A paint sprayer can seem intimidating because that’s what you see professionals using, but that is really not true. It’s something that you can figure out in minutes, especially if you watch a few Youtube videos first. The biggest surprise to me was that you can get them for well under $100. I have this HomeRight sprayer that I’ve been very happy with, but they also have a less expensive version that’s got great reviews.
Paper Plate
Using a paper plate is a simple way to keep drips from the paint can off your floor. And, I bet there’s a good chance you already have one on hand.

Costco Vegetable Box
Ahh, my Costco box. I can’t tell you how much I love it for corraling all my supplies. I’m talking about the free boxes you get when you check out at Costco or other warehouse type stores. The one that I like the most is about 5 inches tall, and it’s got nice sturdy sides. It’s usually marked for “peppers” or “cucumbers”. It’s absolutely perfect for holding all your supplies and keeping wet paint off the floor. I usually keep my paint can, paper towels, paint pail and an old wet washcloth in it, but if I’m painting furniture the box has enough room to hold tack cloths, sanding sponges, and painter’s pyramids in it, too! The best thing about it is that you can slide it around the room with you so that you’ve got everything close when you need it.
Pyramids and Bottle Caps
I must have at least 4 packs of painter’s pyramids that I’ve bought for painting furniture and cabinet doors. If you’re just starting to paint, it won’t be long before you need some pyramids to keep things off the floor. I also keep a cup of bottle caps for when I’m painting something too small to fit 4 triangles under it.
Wooster Pelican Pail
This is one of my biggest “go to” paint supplies! There is rarely a time that I paint without my Pelican Pail. It holds both a paint brush as well as a small paint roller. I use a 4.5″ roller more than anything else. It’s a size that works well for trim, furniture, doors, and to go over brush marks when I do my cut in around the trim and ceiling. What I love most about this pail is that it has an area to roll off the paint from your roller. There are also liners that make clean up easy. All you need to do is throw them away and you’re done.
2 Gallon Ziploc Bag
A Ziploc bag works great to hold both my brush and roller when I take a break or I’m waiting for something to dry. I can even throw it in the fridge overnight and start back on my painting the next day. Storing your wet paint brushes in the fridge will help keep them from drying out longer.
Painter’s Pal
As careful as I try to be, accidents happen. Painter’s Pal is made by Goo Gone and works great to get dried water-based paint up easily. It’s usually available at Home Depot. One of our bedrooms had a ton of dried up paint drops all over the hardwood floors when we moved into our house. I have no idea how old they were (I’m guessing really old), but Painter’s Pal took them off with no problem. It’s also great at cleaning up paint brushes that are starting to get a little crunchy!
Tack Cloth
If you’ve never used tack cloth before, it’s kind of a sticky cheese cloth. I use it to wipe any super tiny dust or lint after I vacuum and before I paint a surface. I’m never without out it! In fact, I’m so afraid of running out that I pick up a pack every time I go to Home Depot. I have no idea just how many packs I have, but I’m always worried I’m not going to have any when I need it.
Touch Up Roller
This little roller is the cutest thing ever! Did you know paint supplies could be cute? It’s just a tiny, little roller that is great for touching up walls, but what I love about it is that it comes with a little roll off tray. It’s also great for painting small craft items like boxes and signs. I actually use this one quite fairly often, and they even have replacement roller covers.
As I’m writing this, I’m realizing for the first time how passionate I am about some of these products. I guess I’m a bit of a paint nerd. It seems silly to love paint supplies so much, but when you do something a lot you figure out what works best for you. I wanted to share these things because they work well and save me time. I wish I had known about more of these things when I was a beginner painter! What kind of paint supplies do you have in your arsenal that you can’t live without?
Do you think this may come in handy later? If so, I’d love if you pinned it! Thanks!

These are all great tools! The spray paint trigger has literally saved my hands π and I also love the paint cup and plastic baggy trick. Thanks for sharing!
Isn’t the spray paint thing great? I can’t believe it took me so long to try it! I thought it would make the paint not come out as well, but I was so wrong.
Great list of items! I wish I had known about Painters Pal a few months ago when I painted my office. I’ll get some for when we do our next project.
Painter’s Pal is the best! I realized when I was writing this post that my bottle only has the tiniest bit left in it because I use it so much. I’m awful about cleaning my paint brushes, and this stuff has saved countless of them. Thanks for checking it out, Ali!
OK…as much as I paint (and I have painted all the rooms in my home and many pieces of furniture too) I am so thrilled to discover some great tools. But, also a little embarrassed that I never thought of the paper plate and costco box. I am at Costco weekly, so could so easily get one of those boxes. And think I need to look into that Pelican Pail. I’ve never used tack cloth, although I know I have a package of it. I do use a ziplock bag.
Holy Cow…am I ever glad you wrote this post…but wish you had done it a week ago, before I painted my office! Oh well, I’m sure there will be another project very soon.
Thanks my friend.
Hugs, Lynn
Thanks, Lynn! You are too sweet! I bet I’d pick up a few tips from you, too. You will love the Costco box! It makes it so easy to move things around the room while you work. I love learning new things that will make the work easier, and I’m so happy to hear I could pass on some new info to you.
I’ve never been to Costco, but now I want a box! Lol. I have painted for years, and I use foil to wrap my brushes and then put them in a plastic grocery bag in the fridge or even the freezer if I need them to last a bit longer. I definitely want to get a sprayer, as I’m about to paint the kitchen cabinets in THIS house that I have only been in 3 years. Can you say “winter project “!!!! π
Kristil, it’s funny that you mentioned painting kitchen cabinets because I’m getting started on mine today. I’m doing them in small sections because I have other projects going on, so it’ll be a while before I get them all done. The Costco box is my favorite painting supply! They may have the same kind of box at Sam’s Club or BJ’s. Maybe someone can pick one up for you? Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you have a happy New Year!
I love your list. I also use many of your hints. Thanks for sharing. But I would like to add something a guy that paints cars for a living shared with me. The rim part on top of the paint can, can get full of paint so he (with a nail) makes a small hole in the rim and then sits the can tilted so all the excess paint runs back into the can and does not stay on the rim. The lid covers this area when put back on. When I paint outside I put all supplies in the box and then put on a cart ( that I use for everything) – this way I can push the cart to where I am painting. Very helpful and saves steps when painting the house etc. large projects. I also use plastic bags to line my roller paint pan and then toss in garbage when finished. I’m so glad I found your site. Thank you
Joy, you are so sweet! I love the idea of putting a nail hole on the rim of a paint can! I usually just wipe the rim with paper towels, but it’s so messy! I’m about to do some painting later today, so I will give that a try. Thanks so much for sharing that tip and checking out my post! Hope you have a great New Year!
Hey Robin,
You really had an awesome list. Paint Sprayer really works for the best! I always used paint sprayer at home. Really cool! Thanks for the awesome ideas.
Cheers,
Oliver
