Hello, friend! I’m back today to give a little more detail on one of my favorite things I did in my master bedroom makeover. I’ve also got some exciting news to share with you at the end of this post, so please stay tuned for more info after these messages!
I have this little desk that I bought from West Elm years and years ago. I love the size of it for a bedroom, but I don’t use it enough for its sole purpose to be a desk. And, since it wasn’t getting used much, I found myself throwing random things in its drawer just to get them out of sight. I also had a problem with not having enough space and storage in my bathroom for putting on my makeup. It was time for this little desk to start working double duty!
The first thing I did was give this guy (or maybe I should call her “girl” since I did paint it pink) some paint to lighten it up. I used a couple of coats of my favorite primer B-I-N to make sure that the paint adhered really well, then I painted it with Verona Pink by Ralph Lauren. It’s a beautiful shade of blush, and I love it against the navy walls in our bedroom. Depending on how sunny it is outside, it can sometimes look fairly white, so it definitely isn’t over the top pink, which makes my husband happy.
I changed out the drawer hardware to this quartz knob I found at Hobby Lobby. I also painted a little gold rim around it to give it a little more definition. Have you checked out Hobby Lobby for their drawer and cabinet pulls? I was amazed at how big and unique their selection is, and it seems like they are always going on sale. It doesn’t look like they have mine online, but I saw this and this in the store that I was trying to decide between. I may still end up using them on my nightstands.
The really fun part was moving all my makeup over so that I can start using this desk as a vanity. This agate box now holds my fingernail polish and files.
I lined the drawer with homemade drawer liner and found some acrylic trays at HomeGoods that were the perfect size.
Once I started moving my makeup over I realized that it had been a really long time since I had gone through it and thrown stuff out. I wasn’t sure how long I should keep different types of makeup, so I had to do a little online research on makeup expiration dates. To make sure I do a better job of throwing out old makeup in the future I used my label maker to mark the date I opened it, and I created this pretty printable list of how long I should keep different types of makeup. Once I printed out the list, I laminated it and put it under one of my trays, so that I never need to look it up again.

I love that I can still use it as a desk when I need to, and now that it’s so pretty I find myself using it so much more than I used to.
I’m still looking for a mirror for above the desk, but in the meantime, I shopped my home and found a mirror that got a quick coat of Rust-oleum’s Winter Gray before I hung it up. Next month is the Brimfield Antique Show which is one of the largest antique shows in the country. It’s such a fun show, and I’m hoping to find a unique mirror there. I also found this industrial chair at the best price I’ve seen for this type of chair. It didn’t come in a color that worked for the room, so it also got a coat of spray paint, but in Rust-oleum’s Metallic Gold, my favorite gold spray paint.
When’s the last time you went through your makeup? I hope you find it helpful to have a printable list of all your makeup’s expiration dates!
Now for the exciting stuff!!! I’d love for you to stop back by this Thursday because I’ll be linking up to Calling It Home’s One Room Challenge as a guest participant. Robin, I love that vanity / desk!! It is great you can use it both ways, and I guess being it pink will make your husband step away from it.
