Hi there, friends! Over the last 2 One Room Challenges I shared our powder room and our master bathroom makeovers, but that still leaves us with a couple of very dated bathrooms that are screaming for a makeover. The bathrooms that we’ve completed were fairly straight forward with mostly cosmetic changes, but the rest won’t be nearly as easy. It’s been much longer since they’ve been updated, and potentially, at least one of them has our home’s original 90 year old toilet, tub, and sink.
Unless your home was recently built, you’re probably in the same boat. You may not have 90 years worth of updating to do, but with trends changing frequently, you may have some aspects of your bathroom that you’d like to change.
Because we still have a few bathrooms in our home that are in need of updates, I am constantly staying on top of the latest trends. Right now, bathroom design trends are all about texture, pattern, and bold elements, which makes for some really fun and beautiful rooms. Let’s check out a few of my favorites…
Cool Mirrors
We’ll get started with one of the more functional aspects of the bathroom, the mirror. Round mirrors are all the rage right now, and even a simple, unframed round mirror looks gorgeous!
If you love the look of the wooden framed mirrors, but prefer a lower cost option, check out this amazing DIY mirror. It looks gorgeous!
Bold Fixtures
Let’s chat a little about plumbing fixtures. Typically, we want our faucets to look nice but blend into the background. Now that so many more faucets and plumbing fixtures are showing up in dramatic finishes like black or brass they can make their own subtle statement in the room. You can’t help but notice this modern black faucet in Love Create Celebrate’s bathroom makeover.
Another faucet trend that you can’t miss and is perfect for tight spaces are wall mounted faucets. They make being short on space look great!
Gorgeous Rugs
I’ve never been a big fan of bath mats scattered around a bathroom floor, so this next trend is something I’m pretty excited about. Move over bath mats, something better’s moving in. We’re seeing more throw rugs in bathrooms instead of the traditional bath mat. These larger rugs help the room feel more warm and cozy, just like any other room of the house.
Stunning Vanities
Turning a piece of furniture into a bathroom vanity is a fairly easy DIY that really brings a lot of character to a room. Bring your unique style into the bathroom by finding traditional, mid-century modern, or whatever your favorite style of furniture is into the design.
Want to update your existing vanity? Go bold! Bright painted bathroom cabinets give a neutral bathroom just the right amount of color and bring some personality into the room.
Patterned Tile
Keeping in line with some of the bold trends that are popular right now, it should be no surprise that patterned tiles are in. I have been a huge fan of patterned tile for a long time now. I even came up with my own faux version of these tiles for our powder room makeover. Patterned tiles are gorgeous and just add so much visual interest to a room. And, if you’re worried that they’re just a fad, they’ve been gaining in popularity for several years now with no signs of slowing down.
Colorful, Bold Wallpaper
When I first told my husband that I wanted to put wallpaper in our recent master bathroom makeover, his response was, “Seriously? We just removed all the old wallpaper from this house, and now you want to put more back up!” Yep, that’s exactly what I want to do. I never thought I would be hanging wallpaper, but there are just so many stunning options out there right now. We spent a couple of hours putting it up, and I just can’t imagine a more beautiful statement wall! It makes my heart happy every time I walk in this room. And, if you’re afraid of the commitment of patterned tiles, wallpaper is a great less permanent option to bring in some visual interest!
Wood Tones
Even though the trend has been to paint over wood cabinets or furniture for quite some time now, wood elements are becoming more popular again, and not just with rustic or farmhouse styles. I love how it really pops in a white bathroom.
Vintage Elements
We’re in a 90 year old house, so of course I have a huge appreciation of vintage design elements, but my personal style tends to be a bit more modern. I’m excited to see more throw back fixtures, like this gorgeous brass showerhead, in a more modern and minimalist setting.
Elements like this antique cabinet turned vanity are another fun way to bring some vintage pieces into the design.
Unfortunately, we are nowhere near ready to start tearing up our remaining outdated bathrooms and make them beautiful, but I sure do love looking at other people’s gorgeous rooms to get ideas for our future makeovers. I also like keeping up with the latest trends so that when we are ready to redo our bathrooms, I will know exactly what I want in them. What are your favorite design trends for bathrooms right now?

Hi Robin,
Thank you for sharing these great bathroom trends. I love the look of a bold rug to really add visual interest to a bathroom space!

Hey Robin,
I’m with you on the bold fixtures. I’m personally getting contrasting colored faucets to make the bathroom less monotonous.
I’m not sure about the rug though. Do you have a problem with humidity in your bathroom?
Still, love your suggestions. Keep it up!
