Hello there! I’m glad you made it back for week 2 of the One Room Challenge! I’m excited to share my design plan with you today.
Wow! I didn’t realize a week could go by so quickly! Between working on our basement guest bedroom and activities with our kids I’ve barely had a moment to sit down. I did take some time out to look at the Featured Designers and Guest Participants at the Calling it Home’s One Room Challenge. There are going to be some amazing rooms, and I’m so excited to see how they turn out. Before I started blogging I loved reading about all of the makeovers in the One Room Challenge, and now it’s even more fun to be a part of it!
Last week was week 1 of the One Room Challenge, and I shared before pics of our recently flooded basement bedroom and my inspiration photos. Today, I thought I’d share my design plan and our “to do” list.

Here’s what I’m thinking on the design plan. I’m painting the bedroom Sherwin Williams’ Tinsmith, which is a light gray with some cool undertones (it’s the background of my mood board below). The current bed and night stands are staying, but I’m repainting the nightstands a glossy emerald green. The ceilings in this basement bedroom are really low, but I’ve found a great low profile light fixture. It’s polished chrome right now, but I think it may look great if I spray paint it gold depending on if I decide to go with gold accents in the room. I’d like to find some bold metal art for the walls. I like the colors in these herringbone rugs, but I’m not completely sure I’ll use them. I think I’ll just have to see how the room comes together.
And…the thing I may be most excited about…we are replacing the ceiling tiles! If you have a basement with drop down ceilings, you know how nasty those ceiling tiles can get. They are dust magnets, and not even vacuuming the ceiling can get the dust off them. I found these vinyl tiles that are much less busy than our current tiles, and can also be washed off if they get dirty.

I put together a mood board to help you visualize what I hope to do.
I’m already starting to feel the heat, and I’ve had a couple of hiccups already. The first was that one of my elephant lamps arrived broken. I’ve sent it back, but I’m still waiting on its replacement. Hopefully, it won’t take too long to arrive since I’m planning on giving them a makeover! The second was when I started working on the baseboards. I thought the paint was in pretty good condition, so I only planned on doing a light sanding and a coat of paint to freshen them up after they were put on again. The problem was that the paint started flaking right off when I went to sand them. It seems the paint didn’t really adhere to the coat before it when they were last painted. So, unfortunately, I had to do a lot more sanding than I planned, and I also needed to give them a coat of primer before I painted them to make sure that didn’t happen again.
Here’s our “to do” list for the room.
Paint Walls
Re-install and Paint Baseboards and Window Trim
Install New Ceiling Tiles
Replace Light Fixture
Change out all the Outlets and Switches to White
Replace Door Hardware
Repaint Night Stands
Possibly Find a Dresser (if I don’t repurpose something I already have)
My hope is to have furniture back in the room by my next update. My husband thinks I’m a little crazy on that one, but that’s what I’m shooting for. I’ve finished painting the walls, but we still need to install the baseboards and trim. And, it might be easier to install the ceiling tiles without the furniture in the room. Did I mention I also have a 4- and 6-year-old to entertain while I’m doing all this? We’re going to have a busy weekend ahead of us! Check back next week to see if we can get it all done, and don’t forget to check out how the other participants are doing this week!
I’d love for you to follow along with me as I finish up this room. You can sign up for my emails (I’ll even send you my really cool recipe binder printable) to receive each week’s update. See you next week!
Check out the other weeks in the challenge:

Robin I adore the direction that your room is headed towards! You did SO much better than I did in my room this week.
I would love for you to share this post at Thoughts of Home on Thursday. I think our readers would really enjoy it!
Good luck in the upcoming week!

Thanks so much, Laura! I think I’ll feel much better about it after this weekend. Plus, I’m ready to be done with the boring stuff so I can start decorating! I’ll stop by Thoughts of Home on Thursday, and I’ll also check out your room! Hope you’ll be back next week!

Definitely feeling your pain on having to sand and prime. I too have baseboards that were not primed and therefore have big flakes coming off. I so dread tackling this project, have put it off for a long time and can’t seem to make myself do it!

The really great thing about this challenge is that it gets my butt in gear for stuff like this. Otherwise, I have no idea how long I would put it off. I hope you find your motivation to get your baseboards done! Thanks for checking out my makeover!

This room is going to be so pretty! I’m interested to read about your experience with the ceiling tiles. I am thinking of doing something similar in our living room. Are these the glue up type or do you have a dropped ceiling track system?
Robin says
Hi, Stevie! I’ll definitely have an update on the tiles. I’m really hoping to get them up this weekend! We have a track system, but there is something similar in the glue up type from the same company. Hope to see you back next week!
