St. Patrick’s Day always holds special memories for me. I grew up in New Orleans, and although I love Mardi Gras, the St. Patrick’s Day parades were my favorite as a child. They aren’t something you hear a lot about, but they are unlike any St. Patrick’s Day parades I’ve been to in any other city.
A few things about the parades stand out in my mind like the walking krewes that would hand out paper flowers in exchange for kisses and catching cabbage, carrots, and potatoes from the floats so that my grandmother could make a big stew afterward. But I also remember the strict dress code of having to wear something green!
Unfortunately, I haven’t been to a New Orleans St. Patrick’s Day parade since I was in my early twenties, but we still love to celebrate. In the past, we’ve taken our kids to local parades, but more recently we’ve started going to parties at friends’ houses.
No matter what we do, I make sure we are still decked out in our green dress code. For my kids, that usually involves some sort of graphic t-shirt, and nowadays with vinyl cutting machines like Cricut or Silhouette, they are so easy to make at home in just a few minutes. This year, I created a “Let the Shenanigans Begin” design for my youngest (because shenanigans tend to follow him around).
HOW TO MAKE Your Own St. Patrick’s Day T-Shirt
Instead of buying a St. Patrick’s Day t-shirt online (that you wear once a year), you can find an inexpensive blank shirt at Michaels and use our free SVG cut file to make your own custom shirt.
WHAT YOU NEED:
If you’ve made at least a project or two with your cutting machine you’ve probably already got most of what you need.
CRAFT TOOLS NEEDED:
- Cricut, or other vinyl cutting machine
- Standard Grip mat
- Weeding and scraper set
- Iron or Cricut EasyPress
SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Blank t-shirt (we got ours at Michaels)
- SVG file
- Heat transfer vinyl
INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Upload our free SVG cut file to your vinyl cutting machine.
With our free SVG cut file, it is so quick and easy to make this shirt yourself. Obtain the file below and upload it to your cutting software to get started. Adjust the size of the design according to what you are applying it to. Since the design is being applied with heat transfer vinyl, make sure to mirror the design because you’ll be cutting the design from the back or adhesive side (though it’s not sticky until heat is applied) of the vinyl.

2. Cut and weed your design on heat transfer vinyl.
With HTV, don’t forget to place the shiny side down on your cutting mat. Once your design is done being cut with your Cricut, weed it to prepare for transfer to the t-shirt.
3. Apply the design to your shirt.
Using either an iron or the Cricut EasyPress, apply the design to your shirt or other surface. If using the EasyPress, they have a super handy heat guide to help you with what temperature to use and for how long to press it.
4. Your St. Patrick’s Day T-Shirt is ready to be worn!
Once the design has set and cooled, it’s ready to be worn. This project could totally be done last minute if needed! Just don’t wash your shirt for at least 24 hours after applying the design.
Can I use an iron to apply heat transfer vinyl?
So true story, I used to use an iron. It totally works if you don’t want to spend the money on a heat press. However, after using it for numerous projects, I couldn’t take it anymore. I was not happy with the quality I was getting. Now I admit, I don’t have a top of the line iron, so that could make a difference. I just couldn’t bring myself to buy an expensive iron when I literally never iron (other than for all my HTV!).
Therefore, when I saw HSN running a special on a Cricut EasyPress bundle, I jumped. For not more than the price of a high-quality iron, I got just what I needed. I am so happy with my purchase. The EasyPress does such an excellent job attaching my HTV to any surface and their online heat guide really works. I follow the instructions and my designs come out perfect! And no, they aren’t paying me to say this, I just really like it.
Can I only use this SVG file for HTV?
No. While this is an SVG cut file, you don’t actually have to cut it out of vinyl. You can easily just print the image, frame it, and use it as home decor. Another great idea would be to use it for a party invitation. Amazon Prints makes it super easy to turn this into an invitation. If your child’s birthday is around St. Patrick’s Day, this could be a really cool cover to their party invitation. Let the shenanigans begin! What child’s birthday party doesn’t have shenanigans? This free file is all yours to use however you’d like for personal use. Please share with us how you end up using it. We love seeing all your crafty creative ideas!
How do you make St. Patrick’s Day Fun for Kids?
Whether you are Irish or not, this can be a fun holiday to celebrate with your children. I personally enjoy any opportunity to make crafts with my boys or surprise them with little treats. They are only little themselves once, so cherish the moments. There are so many things you can do together on St. Patrick’s Day.
- Go to a parade
- Have a party
- Set up a DIY Leprechaun trap in your home – can your family catch one?!
- Make easy St. Patrick’s Day crafts together
- Hand out chocolate gold coins – if it’s ok with your kid’s school, have them pass out these chocolates to all their classmates as a way of celebrating.
- Make a corned beef and cabbage meal together – the typical food that is eaten on this holiday.
- Eat different green treats – you can dip Oreos in green-dyed chocolate, or dye your children’s milk or eggs green. They will think it’s so funny to see their usual food green for the day.
- Learn about the history of St. Patrick’s Day – this would be interesting to talk about with older children.
