From signs and cups to shirts and totes, you can use any canvas you want to place your cute crafting quote onto! We chose to make a sign for our crafting room. Armed with one of these free SVG files and this tutorial, you will be able to whip up your own version in no time!
HOW TO MAKE A SIGN WITH YOUR FAVORITE CRAFTING QUOTE
We love using our Cricut to craft all sorts of fun projects, like these 13 simple Cricut or Silhouette projects. You can use a Cricut, or any other vinyl cutting machine, to create this “Please excuse the mess we are crafting here” sign.

CRAFT TOOLS NEEDED:
- Cricut, or other vinyl cutting machine
- Weeding tool set

1. Download our free SVG crafting quote file.

2. Cut the design out onto removable vinyl.
Upload the free SVG file to Cricut Design Space or the vinyl cutting software you use. Once you size it to your sign, cut it out on removable vinyl. You are using this as a stencil, so you want to be able to easily remove the vinyl from the surface. Weed out the words and images to create the stencil.
3. Apply vinyl to wooden sign.
Use transfer tape to apply the vinyl to your sign. Burnish with a scraper. However, once you peel the transfer tape off, we recommend going over all the letters and image edges with your finger. That way you can feel if it is close enough to the surface to prevent paint bleeding.
4. Paint your crafting quote design.
Now, it depends on the look you want for your sign for how you apply the paint. Some people dab it on the stencil. We slowly and carefully brushed it over the design for a smoother finish. Using three different paint colors, we did apply a couple coats of each. Once we were happy with the paint layers, we did a wet peel of the stencil. It was a little dry, but not completely. We found it easier to remove the stencil this way and less chance of the paint peeling.
5. Hang sign and enjoy!
Once the sign is dry, you are done! It’s so easy, you can make them as gifts for your crafting friends.
Can I use another sign for this crafting quote tutorial?
You can, of course, use whatever blank canvas you want to make this fun design! Actually, while making this sign, we thought it would also be really cool to make a chalkboard sign. We found this chalkboard sign, but there are so many different ones out there. In the past, I have even found some in the dollar bins in Target. A Maker’s Studio has amazing chalk paint that would be perfect to use. Bonus…you can wipe it clean with a wet rag and make a new design on it, making the possibilities endless!

Notes
We recommend peeling the stencil off the sign before the paint is completely dry, to help prevent paint peeling.
